Ski Podcast Survey 2021: The Results

Firstly, can I thank everyone who shared their views about the podcast in our recent survey, with almost 100 listeners responding.

Working my way through your answers, there are some patterns, but if anything, the results perhaps only confirmed the following adage:

“You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time!”

How long have you been listening to the podcast?

You would perhaps expect our most loyal listeners to be the most likely to give their feedback, but I was very encouraged to see that almost 1 in 5 respondents were ‘newcomers’ to the podcast.

This makes sense given our listener numbers, which are up 20% year-on-year.

What would be the ideal length of each podcast?

How long should the podcast be? How long is piece of string? The answer, it seems, varies tremendously.

It’s encouraging that the most common answer was for a podcast of 60 minutes, as that’s what we currently aim for.

Although there was a wide variety of results, roughly 1 in 3 of you would be happy to have just a 30 minute show.

The good news for you is that is how long our special episodes tend to be, although that doesn’t solve the length of the regular episodes (unless you listen at double speed?)

There’s also clearly a demand for a much longer podcast, with one person saying ‘the longer, the better’.

That’s a great vote of confidence, but given that it takes so much time to record and edit already, it isn’t that likely. However, if the circumstances allow (perhaps a deep-dive in a one-to-one interview?) then I”ll look for opportunities to give you this.

What would you like to hear more of/less of?

Every category received votes in both the ‘more of’ and ‘less of’ polls, so to give a better guide to their popularity, I looked at the net score (i.e. ‘more’ votes minus ‘less’ votes’)

That gave the following results:

  1. Resort Reviews (+65)
  2. Equipment Reviews (+54)
  3. Athlete Interviews (+51)
  4. Snow Reports (+48)
  5. Celebrity Interviews (+47)
  6. Unusual Destinations (+43)
  7. Sustainability (+40)
  8. Team GB/Racing News (+31)
  9. Ski Book Group (+27)

The clear winner was ‘Resort Reviews’ and the good news is that (in a normal season), this will easy to resolve and provide.

There was also a call for more ‘Equipment Reviews’ although finding the opportunity to try a range of the latest hardware can be difficult. It is possible however and I will look at this for the future.

Perhaps the only anomaly here is the different between those interested in athlete interviews and news of how those athletes have done. It feels to me that you can’t have one without the other, but I will work on lining up more interviews, particularly as we near the 2022 Winter Olympics.

What features and/or interviews have you enjoyed the most?

Naturally, as we have published almost 100 episodes, this covers a lot of ground.

There were also some great suggestions that we’ll use for content for future episodes including a guide to snow-shoeing, driving overseas and also interviewing local business people (listen out for our interview in Episode 67 with Tim from Sapaudia Brewery Co!)

And the winner was…

We used a random number generator and Adam Horsfield was the lucky person to be pulled out of the digital hat.

Congratulations Adam, we’ll send you your prize as soon as you send us your address.

Thanks to everyone else who took part, for all of your kind comments and constructive feedback.

I will do my best to keep producing the podcast and including the content that you would like to hear.
